Best Foot Forward

To be honest, it is really hard to underachieve when you go out with no expectations.

I had no plans to even go out this morning until I learned that it was supposed to rain this afternoon and the day would prove to be a washout if I didn’t get out in the morning. I elected to put the fisheye lens on the camera and go for a walk in the woods at Green Lakes. I suspected the park was going to be full with people near the lakes (the temperature would climb to 62 degrees and the cold is returning overnight). I parked in the Erie Canal lot and walked into the back entrance to the park with plans to remain topographically below the Rolling Hills throughout the morning.

I knew that the fisheye was a bad choice for the subject matter, but I decided to give it a go anyway. I would accidentally delete my favorite image from the walk, but it was never stellar, so no tears were shed.

Frankly, it was a boring walk. I saw very little in the way of wildlife: I saw a few robins in the treetops, 2 flocks of snow geese very high overhead, and a few squirrels, but nothing that compelled me to take out the 75-300.

I did ultimately take the fisheye off, though. There is a reason that it has entered my camera bag since I obtained the Laowa: I don’t really like or need it. It is an okay toy for an exercise once in a while, much like today, but nothing else.

As for the 12-45 that I put on the camera after, that lens is a stalwart that (if not for size) I wouldn’t ever take off the camera unless I were looking for shallow depth of field or I was in dark environments. Otherwise, the 12-45 is so incredibly versatile and sharp … I love it.

I haven’t been writing here a lot lately, but that is going to change this year.

I need to get back to my old ways. I need to capture more and write more. Today was my first step in that direction.
