Club Theme: White

Sure, I could take pictures of snow, but the subjects of those pictures are usually about the stuff that isn’t white, not the stuff that is.

I tried to take pictures of specific flakes in a pile of snow last night, but that is too-tall an order for my ability. First I tried it with flat light, but that didn’t work. Every flake looked the same and blended into the other, so I tried to light specific flakes so that they glistened and stood out from the others, but it was impossible to control the highlights. So yeah, snow is probably not going to be a subject that I submit.

What will I submit?

Well, one picture is a bit of a stretch, but I liked the idea of “Wite Out”, so I am sticking to it. In thinking of things disappearing, hidden, or covered, I thought about the upcoming Supreme Court ruling that threatens to overturn much of Roe v. Wade, a court decision that has been precedent for 50 years and it seemed too obvious to not use it as inspiration. The choice of hard light became an easy one. So too was the choice of aperture. It is an image that I want to evoke the viewers feelings on the matter, and I purposefully photographed it in a manner that I thought took a neutral stance. The shadow could certainly be forbearing, but I think it could be viewed as strong and decisive as well.

Precedent

The next image was the easy one to think of but the more challenging of the two to execute: milk drops. I was able to get the setup right and I captured a bunch of projections of milk that rose up from the bowl, but many of them missed focus by a bit as the upper portion of the projections were closer to the lens and moved out of focus in relation to the bottom, which was sharp. Of course, I didn’t recognize this until I got the images on the computer, so I was posed with 2 choices: (1) settle for something that was lower in relation to the bowl or (2) setup the whole scene all over again. I chose the former because I didn’t care enough to do it all again … the proof of concept was complete, I had merely failed to wear my cheaters when I was reviewing the images on the back of the camera.

Cannonball!

Tomorrow I will go Destiny and join a handful of club members at the creek-walk to take pictures of bald eagles. Only time will tell if it will be worth enduring the 0 degree wind chills.

You never know. I might walk away with some new friends or some nice pictures. Or both. Or neither. #shrug
