The sunrise forecast looked promising and the clouds looked like they might be high enough to let some light in. Then again, they also looked quite heavy and were a little lower than would usually lend themselves to a nicer sunrise. But, I have seen the sky light up with them even lower.
I had no intentions of going out today; I had hoped to sleep in, but that hasn’t been happening. Even so, I had to drag myself out of the house to try to find a quick composition in the zero-degree temps in the field behind the house.
I knew there were some trees that I could shoot through … I photographed them a few years ago, when I first started exploring this photography-thing as a more-serious hobby.

With snow on the ground and a nice sky, I thought I might revisit this scene. But there has been additional growth since this image was made and the image above is gazing west, not southeast … I tried (quickly) but nothing could be made of it this morning.
I say quickly because I only had about 3 minutes to get out the camera. After hemming and hawing about whether to go out or not, then letting Adeline out, then getting dressed, then walking to the location … well, there was little light to spare.
I did find a composition the I really loved, but the light won’t be right until March 15th, and I doubt that there will be snow on the ground, and I doubt that the sky will be pretty. One year, though, the conditions might be right and I’ll try to remember its potential in the morning light until then.
So, as it was, I settled on a less-than-wonderful composition and was witness to less-than-awe-inspiring light. Even so, I went out and tried.
There is something to be said for the little victories in life too.
